so josh bressers from the open source security podcast was asking for "open source myths" ... i may have gone overboard.. https://mastodon.social/@grimmy/112842791310383980

Ah, SentinelOne, last time I was looking at it in a POC, the architecture at the time would hook every exe and dll with their own code, so would be multi-points of failure. Not all apps liked how it shackled their code.

grim

i wonder why python applications still depend on the six package..

16:01:33

seems like we should really be done with that by now

rekkanoryo

07/25/2024 at 11:43:11 CDT

This is also something that's an issue for anyone who uses the SafeNet Authentication Client for hardware certificate token-based authentication. The default installer includes an "anti-keylogging" component that injects itself into every application it can. I recently had to deal with this on a user's laptop because this AKL thing was flagging as malware and preventing Acrobat Reader, Edge, Chrome, and Firefox from opening for her, which basically crippled her.

11:43:44

to fix it I had to completely uninstall the software that included the Thales SafeNet Authentication Client then reinstall with the special secondary installer that installs the non-AKL version.

rekkanoryo

07/25/2024 at 13:30:23 CDT

...I am seriously tired of applications spamming the hell out of me with stupid notifications as soon as I open them and preventing me from doing work....like sublime text just did for package control updates....I opened the app to edit a text file, not to be bothered with notifications that don't matter

ivanhoe

anyone know of a way to edit an initramfs image relatively easily?

14:26:05

dumbass me didn't realize that the newest raspberry pi OS uses the partition uuid crap to define /boot/firmware and / so my initramfs in my image is broken

rekkanoryo

07/25/2024 at 14:32:15 CDT

nevermind, 30 seconds after I asked that I remembered the initramfs has the mount command available, so I was able to mount the sd card partitions and fix everything.

So intel has their 13xxx and 14xxx issues....AMD was supposed to release their desktop 9xxx chips this coming Wednesday, but they pushed it back 2 weeks saying they found an issue in last-minute validation. Supposedly they know how to detect the issue and not all the chips are affected, but they're pulling everything back that was already shipped out to retailers to test every part individually

13:25:03

the official line is "some of the CPU's are not up to our quality standards"

13:25:48

Sounds like AMD is learning from Intel's mistakes and trying to make damn sure they don't have the same PR mess

13:26:42

delay once and lose some money or have an absolute mess, lose more money, and have a brand trust problem for years

grim

07/26/2024 at 13:41:54 CDT

and people wonder why i've been an amd support for so long 😄

rekkanoryo

07/26/2024 at 14:08:58 CDT

Well, in fairness, AMD has made similar mistakes in the past and paid dearly for it

14:09:10

but it's been a while

14:11:20

so I just converted (this morning, to be clear, so about 8 hours ago) one of my raspberry pi's from 32-bit to 64-bit, with no clamav and with our new antivirus product installed. The 32-bit clamav pi's sit at over 1 GB RAM used (on a 2 GB pi) all the time. The 64-bit one is sitting at 250 MB RAM used.

14:12:17

and there's more crap running on the 64-bit system than there was on the 32 bit. It must be that clamav is just that much of a memory hog

grim

07/26/2024 at 17:31:00 CDT

yeah bulldozer comes to mind too

17:31:48

hah that's hilarious... remember back when people were saying shit like "using 64 bit address for web surfing is wasteful" and other similar shit?

17:32:25

also that since the pointers where bigger it mean everything would require more memory

17:32:49

even though we already had 48bit pae for shit...

rekkanoryo

07/26/2024 at 17:38:08 CDT

yeah, I remember that

17:38:42

we also ran a 64-bit server for pidgin or guifications or something with a 32 bit OS because it only had 2 GB RAM and we wanted to maximize our use of it

grim

07/26/2024 at 17:39:19 CDT

hmm i don't think it was guifications, but maybe when we transitioned from openvz to physical that just happened?

17:39:35

i still remember walking @kstange through that :rwgrimLOL:

rekkanoryo

07/26/2024 at 17:47:08 CDT

It's been so long I can't remember most of the details, I just remember the whole "oh, we'll use like 30% less ram if we run debian 32-bit..."

grim

07/26/2024 at 17:47:58 CDT

something tells me that might have been nicobar... so much weird shit happened with that server.

rekkanoryo

07/26/2024 at 17:50:21 CDT

yeah, and neither one of us knows all of it, I'm sure

grim

grim

07/31/2024 at 14:36:44 CDT

it seems like they're doing what reddit has done with this stuff too, so there is precedent for it

14:39:46

now I don't thing we (pidgin/purple) should implement the store, but being able to let users select their stuff seems reasonable to me. thoughts?

rekkanoryo

07/31/2024 at 14:40:05 CDT

depends on how much work it is

grim

07/31/2024 at 14:40:26 CDT

to me it falls into the same category as being able to select your avatar and the color of your name

14:41:43

well the amount of work is going to be how future proof we want to make it 😄

14:42:27

either way, its a long way out so I won't both with tickets or anything yet.. but it looks like you can pick a single avatar decoration and a profile effect, but i'd need to do more digging/testing

14:43:04

yeah nothing major..

image.png

14.79KB

14:43:34

like i don't want to support reddit's "build your avatar from parts" thing, but this kind of stuff should be fine

14:44:05

also the profile effects are probably just gif/webm and we should be able to do something to make them work

rekkanoryo

07/31/2024 at 14:44:08 CDT

Well, would supporting reddit even be a reasonable thing given the api fee bullshit they're doing

grim

07/31/2024 at 14:44:26 CDT

have api tos's ever affected us?

rekkanoryo

looks like maybe with my gsuite or whatever it's called today

ivanhoeCan't you always capture your screen with a recording utility?

grim

07/31/2024 at 14:52:32 CDT

sure, but recording via the meeting software is generally easier/less error prone

14:52:44

like if i switch screens I'll record that rather than the meeting

ivanhoe

07/31/2024 at 14:52:52 CDT

ah yeah that's true

14:53:50

looks like Jitsi offers recording

14:54:24

oh but that seems to require extra software on the server side

grim

07/31/2024 at 14:58:33 CDT

so my grandfathered gsuite doesn't have a recording option for me to turn on in the admin console..

14:59:08

prepares to duck...

14:59:12

does teams allow recording?

14:59:46

although I'd have to use my laptop for the meeting then because teams refused to use any of my mics last time i tried

rekkanoryo

07/31/2024 at 15:03:49 CDT

It does, but only on paid accounts

15:04:06

and not through the website, iirc, I think you have to use their fat client

grim

07/31/2024 at 15:06:22 CDT

honestly, aren't websites the new fat clients?

15:06:40

like the "fat clients" are usually just the website in a custom browser..

rekkanoryo

07/31/2024 at 15:06:59 CDT

that's certainly the case with crap like discord

15:07:11

but Teams and Zoom have what appear to be actual applications

oh right, i know zoom was, didn't know about teams

rekkanoryo

one work laptop, just been doing it's work, having some windows open and what not, come in day later, it shows the login screen.. then well, "oh windows update force crashed all my running softwares again, fun" .. login... takes forever, like 30-60sec of this complete bluescreen. then it shows the windows desktop wallpaper, then it takes another minute for the taskbar/icons to show. u know why? because the instant you login, that's when post-windows update stuff happens, it doesn't do it after the update, but waits for you to login

14:38:11

so after that is done, then antimalware kicks in just slowign down your whole computer for next 5-10-15min

if windows update ran during the night, why didn't it do all this shit too, instead waiting for me. wasting my time

Unbelievable. And this is the professional product.

what sucks is that, because microsoft archived a lot of their goal to unify everything, except for touch-interface... there's no real enterprise version anymore

14:40:49

why does enterprise version have game bar

14:40:56

and tiktok recommendations

14:42:09

why does windows servers have "active hours"? oh right, because normal windows has it, so it's enforced in server version causing you downtime randomly by default and you can't set a 24/7 on a windows server.

14:44:37

and if we talking about enterprise. We have tons of computers that's headless or used for specific purpose, because we haven't added OneDrive, Office, etc. it ask to "set it up" after windows update at times, usually once a month or so.... and even if you do the process of making a microsoft linked account, because you're not using it daily, windows will ask you to sign in after windows update every other month.

renegadevi

08/01/2024 at 14:50:55 CDT

and I think a important thing is for companies to actually use their own products, if they don't, they don't see the issues to bring that to the table, to get advanced.. why is Jim zemlin, head of of linux foundation using Mac? why is microsoft using mostly linux servers now instead of windows. oh also, windows phone died, as per Satya Nadella and other leaders used Android, so why make their own product better.

14:52:16

other times, we see people leave companies, ending up at other companies that wanted to fix and improve things they couldn't

14:56:12

and as Wendell pointed out in the video. Why OneDrive cloud backups? enterprise would often may have a have a local NAS or secondary storage solution at a cloud privoder

ivanhoeIndeed :rwgrimLOL:

tbh, if it wasn't for AV software at work, linux > windows any day... but companies like Nvidia is what holding everyone back on graphics side.... or audio stuff like Dante.. (well, could blame some on the linux audio side)

oh boy https://x.com/tomwarren/status/1819106303295606839

Intel is laying off over 10,000 employees and will cut $10 billion in costs. Intel also reported a loss of $1.6 billion in Q2 2024 due to its Foundry business and investments https://t.co/jdwnmNFlDw

15:42:14

i saw the intel downfall coming years ago... around the time of Skylake stagnation

theendlessriver

08/01/2024 at 15:42:44 CDT

So now they can give 8.4 billion to their shareholders who else would have gotten nothing? Isn't that how that usually works?

renegadevi

08/01/2024 at 15:45:48 CDT

I remember Skylake shipped with broken iGPU drivers, untested, and they said it worked with Win7 "certified for" sold via OEMs . Took like 8 months before fixing bluescreen when any GPU-intensive software kicked in. We had to return a pack of 15 computers and buy the previous gen. Then Kaby Lake worked but ran fast and hot, hot and not much improvement.

rekkanoryo

The foundry thing, when it was announced, was projected to lose money for 5 years before becoming profitable

15:46:22

we're only on, I think, year 2 of that 5 year prediction?

🤦 I wasted 25 minutes just now on an ansible thing

14:17:10

and it was a really stupid thing on my part...I was doing a one-off thing without a playbook and was trying to do it as root...I forgot to specify --become on the command line.

grim

08/02/2024 at 16:00:42 CDT

doh that sucks..

16:01:27

i spent over an hour today proving my case that one of the access points in the office is dying and that it wasn't a software issue...

16:02:19

10k packets... 3 tests, the second and third were an hour after the first...

10000 packets transmitted, 178 received, 98.22% packet loss, time 477240ms 10000 packets transmitted, 9787 received, 2.13% packet loss, time 109648ms 10000 packets transmitted, 33 received, +3 duplicates, +138 errors, 99.67% packet loss, time 334837ms

oh those tests were done from my laptop near the devices that aren't "showing as online"...

I have a couple spare ubiquiti AP's I can sell 😂

18:07:50

I recently upgraded to wifi 7 AP's so my 802.11ac AP's are just collecting dust now

grim

08/02/2024 at 18:43:08 CDT

yeah i have 4 ubiquti ap lites just sitting in boxes..

18:43:32

but that network failure is at work, so i'm not paying for it 😄

rekkanoryo

08/02/2024 at 18:49:49 CDT

ah, mine are the ac LR ones

18:52:13

and I can confirm, they are longer range than the wifi 7 AP's I replaced them with. I have no wifi 7 devices, only wifi 6 but I lose signal outside the house a good 5-10 yards sooner than I did on the LR AP's

18:52:43

which is still pretty impressive considering how much metal is on the outside of my house

grim

08/02/2024 at 18:59:45 CDT

ah i have ac pros in my house

18:59:50

i deployed ac lites everywhere else

19:00:30

dang that's cool. wifi 6 would be nice even though I don't have any devices, but i've been deploying mesh kits and using wifi 6 just for the backhaul 😄

rekkanoryo

08/02/2024 at 19:06:42 CDT

I can't fully take advantage of the new AP's because I only have gigabit switches, and the new AP's have 2.5GbE

grim

08/02/2024 at 19:10:23 CDT

oh dang

rekkanoryo

08/02/2024 at 19:11:58 CDT

and I looked at replacing my switches with 2.5G ones, and that is NOT feasible

19:12:14

$400 to replace one and $700 for the other

grim

08/02/2024 at 19:12:31 CDT

damn, yeah i think i'm, in a similar boat, maybe port binding 😄

rekkanoryo

08/02/2024 at 19:14:24 CDT

I have port bonding set up between the switches so I get 2 Gb between switches, but that doesn't help the 2.5 GbE devices only getting 1 Gb from the ports they're connected to

grim

08/02/2024 at 19:14:44 CDT

oh right

rekkanoryo

08/02/2024 at 19:18:23 CDT

And the AP's only have a single interface, so no way to bond on them

grim

08/02/2024 at 19:18:50 CDT

ah, my ac pros have 2, not sure if that's for bonding for fault tolerance

rekkanoryo

08/02/2024 at 19:19:46 CDT

My LR's have 2 as well, one's labeled SECONDARY

19:19:56

so I'm assuming fault tolerance

grim

08/02/2024 at 19:20:15 CDT

gotcha

rekkanoryo

08/02/2024 at 19:20:35 CDT

I think the wifi 6 AP's did away with the second port

grim

08/02/2024 at 19:20:50 CDT

makes sense

rekkanoryo

08/02/2024 at 19:21:17 CDT

I'd love to have 2.5GbE switches though, even though I don't actually need it :rwgrimLOL:

grim

08/02/2024 at 19:21:40 CDT

same, i've also considered 10gbe cards for my nas and workstation 😄

19:21:58

and then just put a cable between them

rekkanoryo

08/02/2024 at 19:23:37 CDT

I've thought about that too

19:24:01

with DAC cabling it's not as annoying as it COULD be

grim

08/02/2024 at 19:24:10 CDT

dac cabling?

rekkanoryo

08/02/2024 at 19:24:25 CDT
